Looking for a fun and easy sewing project?
This personalised initial keyring is perfect for using up fabric scraps, making gifts, or adding a custom touch to your bag. Best of all, you can make it in under 30 minutes! Follow this step-by-step tutorial and create your own unique keyring.
I’ve used my Uppercase Alphabet Template as the letter template, but you can use any alphabet template you like.
Materials You’ll Need
-
Initial template
-
Felt – approx. 12cm x 18cm (or double the size of your letter plus a few extra cm each side)
-
Lightweight interfacing (optional, for extra stability)
-
Main fabric – big enough to cover your initial
-
Double-sided fabric adhesive (like Bondaweb, slightly smaller than your main fabric)
-
Cotton twill tape or ribbon – approx. 6cm
-
O-ring clasp
Let's Get Sewing!
Step 1: Prepare Your Fabric
Start by ironing the interfacing onto your felt to give it more stability. (if you're using a thicker felt, feel free to skip this step).
Then iron the Bondaweb onto the reverse side of your main fabric.
Tip: Using scrap fabric is perfect for this project!
Step 2: Trace & Cut Out Your Initial
Place your initial template mirror image onto the Bondaweb side of your main fabric. Carefully draw around the template to mark your letter and cut out using fabric scissors.
Step 3: Fuse to Felt
Peel away the paper backing, place it glue side down onto one half of your felt and iron in place. To secure further, zig-zag stitch around the letter in a medium size, using a complimentary thread.
Step 4: Place Felt Pieces Together
Cut your felt piece in half, place wrong sides together and pin or clip to hold in place.
Step 5: Stitch Around the Letter
Using straight stitch, top stitch around the outside of your letter, leaving a gap at the top for your ribbon. Cut out using fabric scissors
Step 6: Add the Ribbon Loop
Fold your twill tape or ribbon in half, and place it at the top of your letter, raw edges tucked in. Top stitch the opening closed
Step 7: Finish & Attach
Add the O-ring clasp to the ribbon loop — and your keyring is ready!
This project is such a fun way to use up fabric scraps and makes a unique personalised gift. Why not try using scalloped scissors for a decorative edge or mix and match fabrics for a unique look. You can also make multiple initials to create a set of keyrings, super cute!
👉 I created this using my Uppercase Alphabet Template— which gives you every letter template to create keyrings, garlands, or even appliqués.
