My Sewing Kit

I get asked a lot about the tools and materials I use for my sewing projects so here’s a list of my favourite essentials — everything I trust and use daily to bring my patterns to life.

If you’d like to support Elarnie Design, you can use the links below when you shop (some are affiliate links at no extra cost to you).

My Sewing Machine:

  • Singer Tradition 2250 Compact — I've only ever used this machine since leaving school and find it's super easy to use with lots of built-in stitches to get me through my projects and a great price as a beginner.

Specialty Tools

  • Pinking Shears — I actually think I use these just as much as my fabric scissors (and the sound they give off..beautiful!). Pinking shears help reduce fraying, perfect if you don't have an overlocker, as well as reducing bulk on corners. However, I love the pattern that they provide so also use my shears to cut out the garland letters!

  • Scalloped Pinking Shears — A pair of scissors you don't really need, but will want with how gorgeous they make your designs! These work so well on cutting felt to make your piece look dainty and very cute! Mine are the 7mm scalloped size and I just love them.

  • Embroidery Scissors — A must have in any sewing kit. These are smaller super sharp scissors, perfect for cutting away any loose threads or making precise cuts.

Essential Notions

  • Guttermann Polyester Thread — I mainly use white and black thread for my projects so like to purchase these in 1000m to be most cost effiecient. There range is huge and it's such good quality so I'm looking forward to exploring different colours for top stitching.

  • Sewing Clips — Perfect for holding fabric layers without pins.

Fabric & Interfacing

  • Cotton quilting fabric — My current go-to for most patterns as it's soft, has enough structure and is easy to sew. My favourite brands are Liberty and Tilda (both have the most gorgeous floral ranges!) and Dashwood Studio for fun, themed fabric.

  • My go-to wadding - Along with the pinking shears I use, another one of my most asked questions is what wadding I use for my crowns and garland. My ultimate go-to is actually classed as a curtain interlining and it's this polyviscose one from Abakhan. Now I'm not the best with terminology, however it's a low loft, lightweight interlining. The main reason I like it is because it has little to no bearding, meaning the fluffy parts don't show out on the exposed garland edges.
